Why ducting is so important

Why 6″ / 150mm ducting matters more than you might think…


When an extractor isn’t performing as expected, it’s easy to assume the extractor itself is the problem.

But very often, the issue isn’t the extractor – it’s the ducting.

We’re increasingly hearing from customers experiencing poor extraction, excessive noise or reduced performance, only to find that the ducting installed with the extractor is restricting the airflow.

Your extractor is only as good as the ducting it’s connected to.

Ducting plays a critical role in the performance, efficiency and noise levels of your extraction system. Even a powerful extractor can’t work to its full potential if the air is being forced through undersized, restrictive or poorly installed ducting.

That’s why we strongly recommend using 150mm (6″) round rigid ducting or 220mm x 90mm rigid rectangular ducting when installing our extractors.

Not 100mm.

Not 125mm.

150mm. 6″ if you’re ‘old school’.

This isn’t simply a recommendation for installation convenience – it’s about getting the performance you’ve paid for.

Why does 150mm matter?
Reducing the duct diameter creates greater resistance to airflow. Add unnecessary bends, long duct runs or flexible ducting that has concertinaed or ‘mushroomed’, and the restriction becomes even greater.

The result can be:
– Reduced extraction performance
– Increased noise
– Poorer airflow
– Less efficient operation
– A less effective extraction system overall

In other words, the wrong ducting can prevent your extractor from doing its job properly.

Keep the airflow moving
For the best possible performance, we recommend:
✔ Use 150mm / 6″ round rigid ducting wherever possible
✔ Alternatively, use 220mm x 90mm rigid rectangular ducting
✔ Keep the route to the outside as short and direct as possible
✔ Minimise the number of bends and changes in direction
✔ Avoid reducing the duct diameter at the extractor outlet
✔ Never make sudden reductions in duct diameter
✔ Avoid reducing the diameter close to an elbow
✔ Avoid flexible ducting where possible – particularly where it can concertina or ‘mushroom’.

Don’t restrict your extractor before it even gets started.
Choosing the correct ducting at installation stage can make a significant difference to the performance and noise levels of your extractor.
